[Review] Pineapple Tarts Singapore - Homemade CNY Snacks

How do you define nice Pineapple Tarts aka Ong Lai Tarts (in Hokkien) and do you have a preference over how should they taste like ?

I am pretty picky when it comes to this especially so for the pineapple filling of the tart regardless if its the enclosed or open type. Generally, I love fillings that are handmade from scratch and without leaving a coating of "alkaline" aftertaste on the tongue.

My requirement of a nice ong lai tart:
- buttery and melt in the mouth pastry
- sourish pineapple filling
- no alkaline aftertaste

This year, Chinese New Year came early for us and we were lucky to be able to review the goodies from this humble bakery which originated from Penang and had a total of 47 outlets under it's belt, from all over Malaysia. Having to rise to popularity in Malaysia, Pineapple Tarts Sg decided to venture into our sunny, red dot as they do have a rising amount of fans here !

My weakness in doing food review, the product/snacks can easily be gone if it really tasted nice and suits my tastebud. I am struggling indeed with this post to make sure I do have some tarts left for photo taking !!

Ready for some melt-in-the-mouth pineapple tarts? Two tubs of pineapple tarts were sent to us; Original Melt In The Mouth Pineapple Tarts ($19.90 per tub) and Cheezylicious - Cheese Pineapple Tarts($22.90 per tub) .

First hand, I tried the original Melt in the Mouth Pineapple Tarts. They totally met my criteria of a nice pineapple tart ! The pastry was buttery and fragrant, soft yet not crumbly.

Next, the fillings! I felt the level of sourness and sweetness were perfectly blended and even out. The best part of it was, I could even bite on tiny pineapple fibre!

Without even having second thoughts, I popped another tart into my mouth, this time as a whole tart by itself. Yes keep that tart in your mouth, go ahead and savour the tart as the pastry slowly melt in your mouth and follow by the fillings. Trust me, when the pastry and the sourish filling meets. It's really hard to stop at just one!

Cheezylicious - Cheese Pineapple Tarts on the other hand, welcomed me with it's strong cheesy aroma when I lifted the lid. The pastry itself is infused with Parmesan Cheese. So cheese lovers, you will love this. Pastry wise, it was as soft as the original version but I felt it tasted "heavier", perhaps because of the cheese aroma. The filling was no difference from the original, it tasted great! But I will still cast my preference vote to the original melt in the mouth pineapple tarts.

Then came "Da bomb"- Crispy Sia aka Prawn Rolls ($12.90 per tub). This is sure to tentalize your tastebud! These Nyonya rolls, were fried to give your a crunch in every bite !  I would say this is really irresistable because the spiciness of the sambal and fragrant prawn paste blended well together! I love the lingering spicy aftertaste, the fragrant of the prawn paste that remained in the mouth for a few good minutes.

The best part which I love about it, when I liffted the lid, what filled my nose was the nice spicy aroma of sambal and not the smell of oil. This snack by itself is pretty time consuming to make from scratch. Personally, I feel that this is a good buy if you want to get it for yourself or for your friends and relatives. The sambal filling in it was generous too. Some of the ones sold in the malls were mainly just the skin wrapped in with miserable amount of sambal. I strongly recommend Crispy Sia !

All the above are packed in air tight containers as shown and I thought it would be a good idea to recycle these containers to hold condiments after we are done with it !
